Scientists at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center reported on that El Niño conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific and are likely to continue into early 2007. Typical El Niño effects are likely to develop over North America during the upcoming winter season, including warmer-than-average temperatures over western and central Canada, and over the western and northern United States, wetter-than-average conditions over portions of the U.S. Gulf Coast and Florida, and drier-than-average conditions in the Ohio Valley and the Pacific Northwest. Previous El Niño years have produced bumper mushroom crops - hopefully this news bodes well for next year.
But, not all El Niños are the same and some can create havoc with flooding, especially on the west coast. Hopefully this year will bring a mild storm season. If you want to know more about El Niño, visit the NOAA site.
