Michael and Lynn Monroe started FungusAmongUs Inc. in a small corner of their garage in Seattle, Washington in 1993. They were purchasing shiitake mushroom blocks from another farmer in Oregon and set out to find out what kind of market there was for gourmet mushrooms. The response was overwhelmingly positive (with a few skeptics thrown in for good measure) so they decided to take the plunge in 1994 and bought a small farm in Snohomish, Washington, which is about 30 miles north of Seattle.
