Last year a group of individuals from Canada and the U.S. had two large vans filled with various plant roots, bulbs, berries, flowers, etc. that they had gathered from Chief Mountain. Chief Mountain is located in Montana on the eastern border of Glacier National Park (US) and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The mountain is one of the most prominent peaks along the Rocky Mountain Front.
And, as a result of the forest fires over the past few years there will be an abundance of morel mushrooms on the reservation this year. These mushrooms are highly prized on the food market, and the Senior Blackfeet Honorary Advisory Council therefore expect many non-native and non-reservation people to attempt to enter the Blackfeet Reservation and privately owned land.
The Honorary Council warns that Blackfeet Security must be stepped up to watch for gatherers, and be given the authority to possess vehicles that transport morel mushrooms. A legal process, prosecution, authority and security surveillance needs to be put into place. Otherwise, persons who gather mushrooms for profit will wrongfully gain monetarily from the Blackfeet, and clutter, pollute and destroy Blackfeet land. And you don’t want to do that, do you?
