Marin County Mushroom Forays Scheduled

Kick off February mushroom mania with a mushroom collecting foray around Marin Friday, 8 February, 9 a.m. Mushroom forays take place rain or shine. To join a mushroom collecting foray, contact the leaders for directions and bring paper (not plastic) bags and a pocket knife.

In Novato: Indian Tree Open Space Preserve Trailhead with Terry Sullivan, biologyhikes AT aol.com. Meet at the trailhead of Novato Indian Tree Open Space Preserve. Trailhead is at the end of Vineyard where the paving becomes gravel. Park near the open space signpost on the left side of the road. The hike itself is moderately steep to 1,440 feet elevation, five to six miles round-trip. Bring your walking stick, some water and a snack. The trail climbs through oak woodlands, chaparral, open meadows and then leads to a grove of giant redwoods and magnificent hilltop views of Big Rock Ridge and Lucas Valley Open Space.

The mycophiles and mycophagist (one who particularly likes edible mushrooms) main event is the 2nd Annual Marin Mushroom Mania, Sat.,9 February, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A day full of lectures, slide shows, hands-on demonstrations by experts in their fields, taxonomic displays, mushroom identification, kits, cultivation and cooking demos. This popular event is not to be missed! At the Marin Art and Garden Center, 39 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Ross. Cost $25, pre-registration required. Contact 455-5260, www.maagc.org.
